Ancient Coin Certification Service
A freelancer again by 1990, at the beginning of the following year I launched the DAVID R. SEAR ANCIENT COIN CERTIFICATION SERVICE (ACCS). This service was established to provide collectors with a cataloguing service of the very highest professional standards, at realistic cost, and may be accessed on this site. In November of 1993 I formed a business partnership with Rob Freeman, formerly a colleague at Numismatic Fine Arts. For almost a decade we were very active in the ancient coin market, both in the US and in Europe. In 1995 we collaborated with Frank Sternberg AG to stage a major public auction in Zurich, Switzerland, and from 1997 we collaborated with Classical Numismatic Group (CNG) to stage the annual 'Triton' auctions at the New York International (NYINC). With Rob Freeman's business now well-established, by the end of the 1990s my involvement in the business side of the partnership had virtually ceased, though I still undertook occasional auction cataloging assignments. These were on behalf of collaborations between Rob Freeman and various dealers, such as Harlan Berk, in staging auctions at numismatic conventions. Other recent activities have included a bimonthly column on ancient numismatics in The Numismatist, the publication of the American Numismatic Association (ANA). In August 1996 this received the 'Best Column' award from the Numismatic Literary Guild (NLG) at the ANA Convention in Denver.

Back To Books
Over the past fourteen years I have again been devoting most of my time to writing and to coin authentication through my Ancient Coin Certification Service. 1998 saw the publication in London of an entirely new work, THE HISTORY AND COINAGE OF THE ROMAN IMPERATORS. This was the first of my books to be published by Spink & Son who had acquired the Seaby titles from the previous owner, B.T. Batsford. It was the recipient of a Book Prize at the 1999 meeting of the IAPN in Dublin, Ireland. The next work to appear was the first volume of the 'Millennium Edition' of ROMAN COINS AND THEIR VALUES(2000). Volumes II and III followed in 2002 and 2005 respectively. After the completion of this series, I plan to undertake a thorough revision of GREEK COINS AND THEIR VALUES before giving further thought to new titles. I hope to be able to continue producing numismatic publications for the collector for many years to come and thereby to promote the pursuit to which I have devoted a large part of my life. All of us who have enjoyed the many rewards which ancient numismatics can offer have an obligation to try to pass this on to future generations, for only in a true appreciation of the past can one hope to come to terms with the complexities and contradictions of modern life and to have hope for the future.

In closing, I should like to express my gratitude to my son, Dexter, for his creativity and technical expertise in producing this Web site. Now, working from his design studio in Boise, Idaho, he has designed a truly outstanding site. If you agree and are giving thought to having a Web site of your own then why not contact him to get further information.
